Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands

The trade in spices from East Asia made Amsterdam into a very wealthy city in the 17th century. The population grew, and so did the city. New canals were dug to expand the city limits. Wealthy merchants and aristocrats built smart homes and warehouses along the canals. Many of these warehouses have now been converted into apartments.
